EMPOWERED TO DO GOOD by Bishop Dr. J. Akin Atere

EMPOWERED TO DO GOOD

TEXT: GALATIANS 6:10

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

The word empowered means to be energized, to have resources, to be enabled, etc.

Good deeds are acts of kindness, benevolence, appropriate, morally excellent, right, fit and proper.

Ordinarily, man though created in God’s image at the beginning, fell in the garden of Eden, in Gen 2:17 Adam was introduced not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, so that he would not be separated from the source of life but when he was tempted and took of that tree, his eyes were opened to knowledge of good and  evil and he  could make a choice to do good or evil. But the choice usually made was evil and not good. Another example is when Cain killed his brother Abel.

Gen. 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Jer. 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

So man had corrupted the good nature with which he was created by God and this has led to man always making the wrong choices, which leads to separation from God and attracts punishment.

So God in his mercy and love for man gave the Ten Commandments, to serve as basis and  guide for the relationship of man with God and relationship of man to man or his neighbours. But man, typified by the children of Israel broke the laws and made it even more burdensome to fulfill.

Paul captured the issues that are in contention in Rom. 7:7-9

“What shall we say then? … For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.”

Man has a propensity to rebel against his original nature.

Vs 15-18 “For what I am doing, I do not understand, for what I will to do, that I do not do, but what I hate that I do, etc.

It means that from the fall, the desire to fulfill the lust of the flesh and not of the spirit has taken dominance.

Vs 19-20 “For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.”

Paul is saying that he is not able to do good because of sin that has been engrained in him through his mind desires to do good. There is another power driving his desire to sin, to do what is wrong.

Vs 24 “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?”

On our own we are not capable of doing good, because the flesh propels us not to do good, it is influenced by the things of the world around it, and wants to partake of the pleasures offered. Therefore, the man is not able to do any good because it is naturally covetous.

Vs 25 “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

Rom 8:1-4 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, … That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

You are empowered to do good, when you become reconciled to God through Jesus Christ and you are no longer subject to the law of sin  and death, but to the Lord of the Spirit in Christ Jesus.

Acts 10:38 “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

Just like Jesus Christ you have been empowered to do good by the Holy Spirit, because you also have the  Holy Spirit in you. Eph. 1:13.

“Having the nature of goodness is a gift of the Holy Spirit which manifest as a fruit in our lives which people can benefit from.”

Do you have the gift of the Holy Spirit? Are you bearing fruits?

Conclusion:

1 John 4:17 “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”

As He is in the world so we are in this world, we are to love our brothers and do good to all men, we have been empowered because we are in Christ.

You are empowered like Jesus to do good to all men.
