DOING GOOD TO ALL MEN AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY by Bishop Dr. J. Akin Atere

TOPIC: DOING GOOD TO ALL MEN AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY

TEXT: GAL. 6:10

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Man was created to be interactive with his environment, that is why at his creation, God already gave the assignment for him to tend the garden where he is domiciled, also of all that God  created, it was only man that He created by touch, all others were spoken into existence.

Gen 1:26 “And God said let us make man in our image, after our likeness”

When you have an image, it is your replica, when it is after your likeness; it has your nature, semblance.

Gen. 1:31 – “And God saw everything that He has made and behold it was very good”

It means therefore that the nature of goodness is inherent in man,. And  been a replica of God he also naturally have goodness as part of his nature.

Our text say do good that is, be benevolent, be kind, be of benefit, to all men as opportunity permits. So by our text we are called to impact that which is inherent in us (goodness) to all , therefore based on this admonition there are some expectations.

  1. You cannot be selective

Matthew 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Act 10 v 38

“ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with Holy Ghost and  power that He went about doing good and healing all who are oppressed of the devil for God was with Him.”

The great commission (Mat. 28:19)

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

also commands us to reach out to the outer most part of the earth. Our reach is therefore extensive and not exclusive that is all nations.

(Matt. 8:16, 14:36, “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick.”

Matt. 14: 36 “And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.”

Heb. 13:2) “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

  1. Your intent at all times is to impact with goodness in word, thought and deed. (Jer. 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

You are the replica of your father in heaven.

Phil 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

  1. You must go out your way to do good James 4:17.

Therefore to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”

Sometimes doing good, being generous, being kind and benevolent may not be convenient. Just like the story told by Jesus in Luke 11:5-10. The parable of the persistent friend, it was not convenient but the master of the house had to rise to attend to the need of his friend.

  1. Avail yourself of any opportunity.

Gal.6:10 “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Heb. 13:2 “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

Conclusion:

James said “faith without work is dead,” my works is an evidence of the faith I professed. We are called unto good works – to be generous, kind, benevolent, loving.

Gal. 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
